Delft, Vermeer, and the Windmills of Kinderdijk

Vermeer’s Delft, Followed by the Windmills at Kinderdijk

I pair Kinderdijk with Delft because it makes the day feel very Dutch indeed with a combination of city and countryside.

I start in Delft because it’s one of those towns that immediately feels good, not something built for tourists, but it’s almost hard to believe this is a real town, it’s that pretty and photo genetic.

Most tour buses stop briefly at the main square and move on. We don’t. We take our time to walk Delft properly and see the town the way Vermeer knew it more than 400 years ago.

Then we go to Kinderdijk, home to the Netherlands’ most famous group of working windmills.

They were built to control water. Today they are a world famous UNESCO World Heritage site.

Once we’re there, we walk along the dike, get close to the windmills, we even visit one inside. We take a boat ride for some of the best views from the water.

What This Day Is

This is a private full-day tour combining:

  • Delft (Vermeer, canals, and the old town)
  • Kinderdijk (the UNESCO windmills)

I pick you up at your accommodation, drive, handle parking and tickets, and keep the day moving smoothly.

Lunch is included.

Why Delft Is Worth Your Time

A lot of people only know Delft for Delft Blue — and that’s part of it — but Delft is more than that.

This was Vermeer’s hometown. And is closely tied to our Royal Family’s history. It’s also one of the most pleasant small cities to walk around because it’s compact, flat, and easy. Did you know Vermeer would still be able to find his way around, even today

It’s a great start to the day because it slows you down in a good way.

To make Delft more than “a walk,” I include one Delft experience. You choose what fits you best:

  • Delft Blue factory (see how it’s made, and why it became famous)
  • Canal boat tour (if you prefer Delft from the water, with less walking)
  • Delft’s churches (history, atmosphere)

If you tell me what you’d enjoy — I’ll suggest the best option.

Then We Go to Kinderdijk

Kinderdijk is the windmill place people picture when they think “the Netherlands.” Althought most people actually go to Zaanse Schans a tourist version, much closer to Amsterdam. But Kinderdijk is the real deal. Just hard to get to.

At Kinderdijk, a Unesco World Heritage site, we take it at your pace:

  • walking along the paths, taking the boat (or both)
  • stopping for photos when you want
  • visit a real working windmill to learn about its history

Why This Combination Works

I like pairing Delft with Kinderdijk because you get two very different sides of the Netherlands, while both feel equally Dutch:

  • Delft is human-scale: canals, streets, stories, soaked in history
  • Kinderdijk is wide and open: water, sky, windmills

It’s a great day out of the city.

Who This Tour Is For

This tour is a great fit if you:

  • want to see truly authentic Dutch gems on the same day
  • care about Vermeer and Dutch culture
  • prefer a comfortable pace and a well-planned day
  • like having one included Delft choice rather than a fixed script

Who This Tour Is Not For

This is probably not your tour if you:

  • want to cram in multiple villages on the same day
  • want a fast checklist itinerary, at a low price
  • only want Kinderdijk and nothing else

If you want windmills only, I’d rather help you choose a simpler option. Just get in touch for custom private tour.

Why Book This Day With Me

This day works because I handle the details and take care of the logistics which would be complicated on your own: timing, parking, tickets, and choosing what’s actually worth doing in Delft.

You don’t have to figure anything out on the fly. You just enjoy the day.

You are truly the best! From the bottom of my heart, we are so thankful for today. And again, beyond your easy company and knowledge, your (and Herman’s) attention to details is simply superb!
