Kinderdijk Windmills & Medieval Bruges Private Tour

Kinderdijk Windmills and Medieval Bruges — Two Countries, One Day

This is a long day, and it’s very different from my other tours. But if you want to visit these two bucket list destinations than this is your tour. Both places are incredibly beautiful.

We start in the Netherlands and end the day in Belgium. This is a long day and there is some real driving involved, but it’s worth it. I only offer this tour for guests who are comfortable with that.

If you don’t mind, this can be one of the most memorable days of your trip.

In the article you learn all about how to get from Amsterdam to Bruges the beautiful medieval city in Belgium.
Medieval Bruges by boat.

What This Day Is

This is a full private day that connects two places that don’t often appear together — but work surprisingly well.

We begin at Kinderdijk, where you see the Netherlands’ most famous group of working windmills, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

We walk along the dike, get close to the windmills, and even visit one. During the boat ride you get the best photo opportunities. You’ll learn how these windmills were built to manage water and why they are still here today. There’s space to walk, look around, and enjoy the open landscape.

From there, we cross into Belgium and continue to Bruges.

Bruges is one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities. Narrow streets, canals, and a historic center that still feels intact. Once we arrive, you have time to walk, explore, take a boat ride, and sit down for an authentic Belgium dinner before we head back to Amsterdam.

All tickets and meals are included.

About the Drive

Yes, this is a longer day. Bruges is a 3-4 hour drive from Amsterdam, one-way.

The drive is part of the day, and that’s something to be honest about. However, you travel privately, without trains, transfers, or meeting points. You sit comfortably, the route is straightforward, and there’s no pressure to hurry. It’s also a great time to take a nap, or read. Or we can talk about Dutch culture, the rest of your trip, and of course some background information about the places we visit.

Why I Offer This Tour

I don’t offer this tour to fit more into a day.

I offer it because Kinderdijk and Bruges are completely different places, and two places many people have on their bucket list.

You start with windmills, water, and open space.
You end the day in a medieval city.

What makes it work:

  • We break the drive with a memorable stop in the Netherlands and experience the UNESCO windmills in person
  • See Bruges, a dream destination for many
  • Enough time at both
  • Private travel, so the drive is quiet, and comfortable

Who This Tour Is For

This tour is a good fit if you:

  • Are comfortable with a long, full day
  • Like historic cities and walking
  • Want to see both the Netherlands and Belgium
  • Prefer private travel over public transport
  • Don’t mind investing time for a special day

Guests who book this usually want to fit Bruges into their Amsterdam trip without the hassle of going there on your own.

Who This Tour Is Not For

This tour is probably not right for you if you:

  • Want a shorter or more relaxed day
  • Don’t enjoy long drives
  • Prefer staying in one country

If that’s the case, I’d recommend taking a look at my private Kinderdijk and Delft Tour. You still get to see the famous Kinderdijk windmills, and visit a city that can easily rival with Bruges, but is much closer by.

My wife and I worked with Gerrit before our trip to the Netherlands this past April. His advice was invaluable and transformed our trip. We toured with him for two days while we were there and he was able to quickly respond to variety of situations (changes in weather etc) creatively and easily.

In addition he is very personable and knowledgeable. We can’t recommend him highly enough!
