Two Classic Routes: The Famous Villages — or a Local Day Most Visitors Never Consider
This private countryside tour gives you a clear choice between two very different days outside Amsterdam.
One option follows the classic route many visitors abroad already know. The other takes you through a quieter part of North Holland that most travelers never think to visit — and often end up loving even more.
You don’t have to decide blindly. I help you choose what fits you best or just tell me in the comments on your request form.
What This Day Is
This is a full private countryside day, planned around one of two routes — or a thoughtful mix of both.
Both options are well-paced.
Both avoid rushing.
Both are handled door to door, so you don’t have to think about logistics.
What’s different is the feel of the day.
The Two Countryside Options
Option 1: The Classic Dutch Countryside
This is the route many visitors recognize from photos and guidebooks, plus some local unknown stops where tour busses never come.
We visit places like:
- Zaanse Schans for windmills and historic houses
- Volendam or Marken for a traditional harbor village
- Edam, known for its historic center
This option works well if you:
- Want to see the places you’ve heard about for years
- Enjoy recognizable names and classic views
- Are visiting the Netherlands for the first time
These locations are popular, and that’s part of their appeal. But it also means more crowds and a bit less authenticity.
Option 2: A More Local Day in North Holland
This is the route I often recommend when guests want something calmer and more varied.
We follow a beautiful triangle through North Holland:
- Hoorn, a historic trading town on the former Zuiderzee
- A steam tram ride through farmland to Medemblik
- A boat crossing to Enkhuizen, a pretty and often overlooked town
This option feels:
- Slower
- More local
- Less tourist-driven
Many guests tell me this day feels more like being in the Netherlands, not just seeing it.
You Don’t Have to Choose Alone
Most guests don’t know which option fits them best — and that’s normal.
I help you decide based on:
- Your travel pace
- The season
- Crowd levels
- What you’ve already seen
Some guests choose the classic route with confidence.
Others start there and switch once they realize they want something quieter.
A few blend elements of both.
That flexibility is the point.
You are truly the best! From the bottom of my heart, we are so thankful for today. And again, beyond your easy company and knowledge, your (and Herman’s) attention to details is simply superb!

Why This Day Is Different
Most countryside tours follow the same loop.
I don’t.
What makes this day different is:
- You’re not locked into one script
- You’re not sharing the day with strangers
- We move at your pace, not a group’s
- I adjust when something feels more interesting — or less
Because I grew up here, I know which places still feel calm and which ones only work on paper.
