Flower Auction & Working Tulip Fields  — Private Full-Day Tour

A full spring day among real tulip fields — away from tour buses the crowds

This tulip fields tour is built around the best way to see tulips in the Netherlands: wide, open working fields with long rows of color, far from tour buses and designated photo stops.

I combine these fields with an early visit to the flower auction, so you not only see tulips at their best, but also understand how they move from Dutch soil to homes and shops around the world. It’s the largest flower auction in the world — and genuinely worth the early start.

Why These Tulip Fields Feel So Different

Many visitors don’t realize that the most crowded tulip stops are not true working fields.

Farmers are sometimes paid to keep small sections in bloom longer so large groups can stop there. Everyone gathers in the same narrow area, and the focus quickly shifts to waiting your turn for a photo.

On this day, we visit active tulip-growing areas instead.

That means:

  • Long, uninterrupted rows of tulips in every color
  • Fields spread out across the countryside
  • Very few other visitors
  • Space to walk, look, and enjoy the view at your own pace

This is how I like to see tulips myself — and how I enjoy showing them to my overseas friends and guests.

An Early Start — But I Promise It’s For a Good Reason

We begin the day early with a visit to the flower auction near Aalsmeer. The largest flower auction in the world.

This is a working place, not an attraction, and that’s exactly why it’s worth seeing. You’ll get a clear sense of the scale and rhythm behind the Dutch flower trade.

I explain what you’re seeing as we go, so it adds context without feeling technical or rushed.

From there, we head into the countryside.

Prefer a Later Start For This Tulip Fields Tour?

The flower auction requires an early start (typically around 6:15 a.m., depending on your location in Amsterdam).

Instead of the auction, we focus more on the countryside around the tulip fields, adding one or two meaningful stops nearby — sometimes a UNESCO-listed site or a historic town.

You’ll still see the working tulip fields in full bloom. The difference is simply whether the day starts with the auction or eases into the fields and surroundings.

I’ll talk this through with you before the tour so the day fits your pace.

You are truly the best! From the bottom of my heart, we are so thankful for today. And again, beyond your easy company and knowledge, your attention to details is simply superb!

I Usually Recommend This Day to Guests Who:

  • Want to see large, open tulip fields, not fenced-off photo areas
  • Prefer space and calm over crowds and buses
  • Enjoy learning a bit more about what they’re looking at
  • Like a well-paced day that feels relaxed, even if it starts early

This Day Is Probably Not the Right Fit If You:

  • Mainly want a day centered on enjoying flowers in different settings
  • Prefer less focus on how tulips are grown and traded

If that sounds like you, my Keukenhof & Tulip Fields tour is usually a better match.

Is This Better Than Keukenhof?

It’s not better — it’s different.

Keukenhof is carefully designed and very popular.
This day focuses on scale, space, and countryside atmosphere.

Some guests enjoy doing both on separate days. Others pick one based on what matters most to them. If you’re unsure, I’m happy to help you decide. Just send me a message.

My wife and I worked with Gerrit before our trip to the Netherlands this past April. His advice was invaluable and transformed our trip. We toured with him for two days while we were there and he was able to quickly respond to variety of situations (changes in weather etc) creatively and easily.

In addition he is very personable and knowledgeable. We can’t recommend him highly enough!
