As one of the largest transit hubs in Europe, plenty of accommodation is available on and around Amsterdam airport.

So which Schiphol Airport hotels are best for you?

You can book a room opposite your departure gate in the transit area, to luxurious hotels within walking distance and hotels in the surrounding area with free airport shuttles.

This post explores your options and my personal recommendations.

Whether you want to spend a few hours during the day, an entire night, or multiple nights, I’ve got you covered.

I hope to make choosing your stay at or around the airport much easier.

Benefits To Airport Hotels

  • A great place to withdraw and refresh during the day.
  • Convenient for an early departure the next day.
  • Often more affordable than city hotels so that they can make a good base too.

Types Of Amsterdam Airport Hotels

  • Transit Hotels
  • Terminal Hotels
  • Schiphol Area Hotels

Schiphol Transit hotels

The benefit of staying at a transit hotel is that you’re right near the departure gate of your next flight. What makes these hotels unique is that they are AFTER security. You walk to your gate in minutes the next day.

These hotels are perfect if:

  • You’re transferring flights at Amsterdam (and you are not leaving the airport).
  • Or when you fly early the following day, travel outside of Europe and with hand luggage only.
  • For daytime use to refresh and nap.

You can recharge and refresh in the privacy of your own room while you don’t have to worry about lines at security and passport control.

Who Can Use A Transit Hotel At Schiphol Airport?

  • Travelers who have connecting flights at Amsterdam Airport (you travel without checked luggage, or it’s checked through to your final destination.
  • Travelers who depart from Amsterdam with hand luggage only (you can only check-in luggage on the day of departure). If you have luggage to check in, arriving a day early to stay at a transit hotel is impossible.
  • Perfect for connecting travelers without a visa. Since you don’t go through passport control.

Schiphol Airport has two hotels in the transit area where you can book a room:

1. Mercure Transit Hotel Amsterdam Airport Terminal

Mecure Transit hotel Schiphol Airport.
Mercure Transit Hotel Schiphol Airport – Photo: Booking

The Mercure is a mid-range 3-star Schiphol transit hotel with regular but renovated rooms. It doesn’t get the highest reviews. Still, its rooms are adequate, and you can’t beat the location.

If you’d look at the Schiphol airport map, it’s right between the E and F gates in the transit area in the middle of the airport. Right next to the KLM Crown Lounge.

All rooms are soundproofed, don’t worry about the fact you’re inside an airport.

This transit hotel doesn’t offer a restaurant. But vending machines are available. However, many restaurant options are available right in front of the hotel entrance in the departure hall shopping area, from fast food to dine-in restaurants.

You can check availability and prices at the Mercure website.

Yotel Amsterdam Schiphol Transit Hotel

The Yotel Amsterdam Airport hotel is a more modern and “budget” friendly option with tiny, almost capsule-like rooms.

When I read reviews, I notice older travelers have trouble staying at this hotel. Rooms are capsules, thus tiny. Also, things are automated and not that well explained. It has a stronger appeal to the tech-savvy generation.

But if the Mercure is unavailable, or you’re looking for something more budget. This is a good alternative. Just have the right expectations.

The design is innovative, and it can be fun to stay here because it’s so different and cool. With the word budget, don’t expect a bargain. But rates are usually lower than the Mercure Hotel.

It’s a Schiphol hour hotel, meaning you can book and pay by the hour. Perfect if you’re in transit and want to refresh yourself.

Expect a tiny cabin, but modern and private. You can recharge (both yourself and your appliances), watch TV, or shower in your private bathroom. There is free WIFI.

There is no restaurant, but there are many options in the terminal. Check out more photos and rates of the Yotel Schiphol Transit Hotel.

Airport Hotels At Schiphol Terminal

Three other hotels are on the airport premises but before security, allowing you more flexibility to move around. Perfect if you travel with luggage or want to go into the city.

These are (almost) in front of or next to the terminal building. And perfect options to eliminate travel time to the airport before your flight but still allow you the freedom to move outside the gates area.

1. CitizenM Schiphol Airport hotel

This 4-star hotel offers super tiny but comfortable modern rooms. These rooms might be small, but they look very cool. And surprisingly, the hotel still managed to get a lot of amenities in these rooms, like a private bathroom and a small desk.

Each room has a large TV with free movies, complimentary WIFI, and international power outlets. These are handy for charging your mobile device(s) even if you forgot an adapter.

The reception area is also perfect for sitting, working, and relaxing. The lobby has a contemporary living room feel to it.

You can get some work done here or relax on the couch. There is free WIFI available. Food service is minimal, but you have plenty of options in the terminal building.

The CitizenM airport Schiphol Hotel is located right next to the terminal building. It’s a few minutes on foot to reach the hotel. Follow this link to book a room at the CitizenM Schiphol Airport Hotel.

2. Sheraton Amsterdam Airport Hotel

The Sheraton Hotel is connected to the terminal building by a covered bridge. You don’t even need to go outside.

Rooms are comfortable but a little pricey, as you would expect from a luxury airport hotel. The Sheraton offers the option to book a room for day use (between 9 am and 6 pm) or, of course, for a night. Free WIFI is available.

A full-service restaurant is on-site. It serves an excellent breakfast buffet in the morning (included with specific rates).

Check prices and availability for the Sheraton Amsterdam airport hotel here.

3. Hilton Amsterdam Airport Hotel

The oval-shaped Hilton hotel looks stunning from the outside and the inside. The views from this hotel are excellent in every direction (ask for a higher floor). And you don’t have to worry about airport noises since each room is soundproofed.

Rooms also feature the Hilton Serenity bed and amenities like a 40-inch TV, a mini-fridge, a coffeemaker, and complimentary WiFi.

The Hilton hotel is connected to the terminal by a walkway (the same as the Sheraton), but the distance is slightly longer. It’s about a 5-10 minute walk via a covered walkway from the terminal. Free WIFI is available, and there is a restaurant. In the morning, an extensive breakfast buffet is served.

Other Schiphol Airport Hotels Connected By Airport Shuttle

Hotels directly on the airport premises come with a price tag, and your options are limited to just a few hotels. More choices (and more reasonable pricing) can be found if you book an Amsterdam Airport hotel with a shuttle service near the airport.

Radisson Blu Hotel Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

The Radisson Blu Hotel Amsterdam Airport is 15 minutes away from Schiphol Airport. It offers a convenient shuttle bus service to and from the airport.

The hotel’s spacious rooms have free high-speed Wi-Fi and coffee and tea facilities. Start your day with a delicious breakfast at the Haven Restaurant, or opt for a healthy fare at the OTIUM Restaurant.

The OTIUM Lounge serves refreshing cold beverages and light snacks in a relaxed lounge atmosphere.

You can reach Amsterdam center by public transportation from the hotel (either by bus or the shuttle bus, and then a train).

Steigenberger Airport Hotel

The Steigenberger Airport Hotel Amsterdam is conveniently located near the private aviation terminal at Schiphol Oost. It’s just a quick 10-minute with the free shuttle service to Schiphol Airport.

Nearby you have the Amsterdamse Bos, ideal for biking and walking. But also amenities like a small supermarket. Bike rental is available.

Rooms are decorated with natural materials and colors, with extra-long beds, satellite TV, and tea/coffee-making facilities.

A Lifestyle Club & Active Spa on-site features saunas, a steam bath, a heated indoor pool, a fitness room, and massage treatments.

Van Der Valk A4 Airport Hotel

Van der Valk is the major hotel chain in The Netherlands. It’s an excellent place to stay. You can find Van der Valk hotels usually at the edges of cities near a freeway. This particular location is massive next to the A4 freeway.

Van der Valk hotels are known for their breakfast buffets. Even locals, including myself, sometimes go to their Van der Valk hotel for breakfast or brunch.

The benefit of the Van der Valk A4 Airport hotel location is that they’re close to the airport, offer a free shuttle, and they start breakfast extra early from 5 am.

There are also a few fast food options and a casino near the hotel.

If you plan on going into the city or other destinations, you can take the shuttle bus back to the airport and then transfer on a train or use public transport buses that stop before the hotel.

Ibis Styles Amsterdam Airport hotel

Ibis hotels are usually a bit more basic but look fun and modern. What we like about Ibis Styles hotels is that they make a point of designing every part of the hotel. No boring hotel rooms and reception areas here.

The Ibis Styles Amsterdam Airport is close to the airport and has many designers touches. Other nice extras are complimentary breakfast and using Auping beds and Rituals products in each room. Rituals is a Dutch cosmetic brand that took the world by storm. I love their products, and I see them elsewhere. It always makes me a little bit happier.

What Hotels Would I Choose?

There you have it. A selection of nine hotels to stay at or near Amsterdam Airport. These hotels are already filtered based on reviews and location. But which hotel would I personally recommend to whom?

Did you Know There Are Four More Airports in Holland?

Four other airports in Holland are used for commercial flights. If you want to travel around Europe, these can be a great option. I’ve written a whole post on the five airports in Holland. Check it out by clicking on the link.

I’ve also written a post to save money on your flight. You might want to read that post here.
