Spend the night at a Schiphol transit hotel or close to the airport

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is one of the major transit hubs in the world. There is plenty of accommodation available around the airport. From rooms right opposite your departure gate to hotels in the surrounding area with free airport shuttles. In this post we list the different options for you, and our personal recommendations for each.

Whether you just want to spend a few hours during the day (perfect, for example, if you arrive from the United States on a red-eye flight with a very early arrival), a full night, or multiple nights, we've got you covered. We hope to make choosing your stay on or around the airport a lot easier.

Sometimes when you fly late, early or you have a long layover, you just want to spend the night at the airport. At least, we often do this. And sometimes we just prefer to stay near the airport for our entire trip.  Airport hotels are often more affordable than their city center counterparts and transport links are usually really good.

At Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, there are few hotel options on the airport premises itself, and many more options around the airport (with a free airport shuttle).

But first, which hotel is right for you?

  • A Schiphol transit hotel (after security, near the departure gates)
  • A hotel on the airport premises (within walking distance from the terminal)
  • A hotel near Amsterdam Schiphol airport (with a free shuttle bus)

Schiphol Transit hotels:

The benefit of staying at a transit hotel is that you're right near the departure gate of your next flight. You can recharge and refresh in the privacy of your own room, while you don't have to worry about lines at security and passport control. Another benefit is that these Amsterdam Airport transit hotels also rent their rooms for day use. Perfect if you have a longer layover and want to rest.

Since these hotels are in the transit area (behind passport control), not everybody is eligible to stay here. Let's first cover that:

Who can use a transit hotel at Schiphol airport?

  • Travelers who have connecting flights at Amsterdam Airport > and whose baggage is checked through to their final destination, if you travel with checked bags <
  • Travelers departing from Amsterdam with hand luggage only (you can only check-in luggage on the day of departure) making it impossible to arrive a day early to stay at a transit hotel if you have luggage to check-in.
  • Perfect for connecting travelers without a visa. Since you don't go trough passport control.

There are two hotels in the transit area where you can book a room:

Mercure Transit Hotel Amsterdam Airport Terminal

The Mercure is a mid-range 3-star Schiphol transit hotel with regular, but renovated rooms. It doesn't get the highest reviews, still, its rooms are adequate, and you can't beat the location.

If you'd look at Schiphol airport map, it's located right between the E and F gates in the restricted area, in the middle of the airport. Right next to the KLM Crown Lounge. You don't even have to go outside, how convenient is that?

All rooms are soundproofed, don't worry about the fact you're inside an airport. This transit hotel doesn't offer a restaurant. But vending machines are available.

However, you have all the restaurant options available to you right in front of the hotel entrance in the departure hall shopping area. From McDonalds and Starbucks to the Bread restaurant and everything in between.

YOTELAIR Amsterdam Schiphol Transit Hotel (budget option)

The Yotel Amsterdam Airport hotel is a more modern and "budget" friendly option with tiny, almost capsule-like rooms. The design is very innovative, and it can be fun to stay here just because it's so different and cool. With the word budget, don't expect a bargain. But rates are usually lower than at the Mercure hotel, and it's a Schiphol hour hotel, meaning you can book and pay by the hour. Perfect if you're in transit.

Expect a tiny cabin, but modern and private. You can recharge (both yourself and your appliances), watch TV or take a shower in your own private bathroom.

Day use: Yes
Restaurant: No
Private bathroom: Yes

Airport hotels at Schiphol airport:

If you can't or don't want to stay at a transit hotel, there are three other hotels on the airport premises. Those are (almost) in front of, or next to the terminal building. These are perfect options if you want to eliminate travel time to the airport before your flight.

Because these hotels are located outside the transit area, everybody can book a room here.

These are the three hotels at Amsterdam airport close to the terminal building:

1. CitizenM Schiphol Airport hotel

Room at the CitizenM Schiphol Airport hotel.

This 4-star hotel offers small but comfortable modern rooms. These rooms might be small, but they look very cool. And surprisingly, the hotel still managed to get a lot of amenities in these rooms. Like a private bathroom and a small desk.

Each room has a large TV with free movies, complimentary WIFI, and international power outlets. These come in very handy to charge your mobile device (s) even if you forgot an adapter.

The reception area is also perfect for sitting down, work and relax. The lobby has a contemporary living room feel to it. You can get some work done here, or relax on the couch.

3. Hilton Amsterdam airport hotel

A few years ago, the old Hilton was demolished, and a completely new and stylish Hilton hotel was rebuild and opened at Schiphol. The oval-shaped hotel looks stunning from the outside.

The views from this hotel are excellent in every direction (ask for a higher floor). And you don't have to worry about airport noises since each room is soundproofed. The rooms also feature the Hilton Serenity bed and amenities like a 40-inch TV, a mini-fridge, a coffeemaker, and complimentary WiFi.

The Hilton hotel is not directly connected to the terminal, but it's on the airport premises. It's about a 5-7 minute walk via a covered walkway from the terminal. Or you can take a short free shuttle ride to the hotel.

Free Breakfast: Depending on the room rate

Other Hotels in Amsterdam near the airport:

The hotels directly at the airport come with a price tag, and your options are limited to just a few hotels.

If you're looking for more choice, more reasonable prices, or a specific chain (or a combination of these), an Airport hotel in the surrounding area might just be the perfect option for you. You're still close and don't have to worry about arranging your own transport.

Below are a few of our recommendations for hotels near Amsterdam Airport. Hotels we think are both comfortable and practical. They must, for example, have beautiful modern rooms and a free airport hotel shuttle to make it to our list.

Renaissance Amsterdam Schiphol Airport hotel

Room at the Renaissance Amsterdam Schiphol Airport hotel.

We like the Renaissance a lot because of how it looks. It's a very modern hotel. With warm natural colors. The rooms are almost Scandinavian, and we have a weak spot for Scandinavia. This is a hotel that makes us happy. It's located in Aalsmeer, not the town proper but actually right on the fence of the airport. You're just minutes away from the terminal building with the free shuttle that is offered. The Renaissance is part of the Mariott hotel group.

Hyatt Place Amsterdam Airport hotel

Hyatt Place is another modern hotel with reasonable prices. The hotel is modern-looking, warm, and colorful. It's located in Hoofddorp, a town on the opposite side of the airport. But again close by the terminal with the free airport shuttle that is provided by the hotel.

Some rooms have excellent airport views (make sure to ask for one of those in your remarks when booking).

Van Der Valk A4 Airport hotel

Van der Valk is the major hotel chain in The Netherlands. In recent years they upgraded most of their hotel rooms, and it's an excellent place to stay. You can find Van der Valk hotels usually at the edges of cities near a freeway. This particular location is massive.

The Van der Valk A4 Airport hotel is located right next to the A4 motorway and the airport. Van der Valk hotels are known for their breakfast buffets. Even locals, including us, go to their local Van der Valk hotel just for breakfast. At the Van der Valk A4 Airport hotel location, they start breakfast extra early from 5 am.

ibis Styles Amsterdam Airport hotel

ibis hotels are usually a bit more basic. What we like about ibis Styles hotels is that, yes, they are a bit more basic than say the Hyatt or Renaissance hotels, and rooms are smaller. But they make a point of designing every part of the hotel. No boring hotel rooms and reception areas here. The ibis Styles Amsterdam Airport is close to the airport and has many designers touches.

Other nice extra's are a free breakfast and the use of Auping beds and Rituals products in each room.

Rituals is a Dutch cosmetic brand that took the world by storm. We love the smell of their products. Having Rituals products in their hotel bathrooms is a major plus for us :-).

Holiday Inn Express Amsterdam - Schiphol hotel

The Holiday Inn Express is a more budget-friendly hotel with nice-looking clean, albeit small rooms. The rooms are a bit more basic than the hotel rooms above.

One benefit of staying at the Holiday Inn Express is that breakfast is free. It is included in your hotel room price, as is WIFI and coffee and tea in your room.

The Holiday Inn is located in Hoofddorp as well, about 4mi / 6 km from the airport and it offers (of course) a complimentary shuttle.

NH Schiphol Airport hotel

The NH hotel Schiphol Airport is another great option at an affordable price. And just minutes from the airport. The hotel offers a free shuttle service and comfortable modern rooms. What we love in particular about this hotel is the restaurant's look and feel. It's like you're dining in a greenhouse full of plants. It's extraordinary. You must check it out if you stay here.

Free WiFi: Yes
Day use: No
Restaurant: Yes
Private bathroom: Yes
Free Breakfast: Depending on the room rate
