Van Gogh in Brabant: What’s Actually Worth Visiting

If you want to follow Vincent van Gogh’s early life in the Netherlands, Brabant is where you need to be.

This is where:

  • He was born
  • He decided to become an artist
  • He painted The Potato Eaters
  • He began to take himself seriously as a painter

But not every Van Gogh location in Brabant is equally worth your time.

This guide is for you if:

  • You’re already interested in Van Gogh beyond just the museum
  • You want context, not only masterpieces
  • You’re willing to leave Amsterdam

It’s not for you if:

  • You’re looking for one major museum experience
  • You prefer iconic paintings over biography

I’ve visited every major Van Gogh location in Brabant. Some impressed me. Some disappointed me. Below I’ll tell you exactly how I would prioritize them.

Nuenen — The Essential Stop

If I had to choose only one place in Brabant connected to Van Gogh, I would choose Nuenen. Without hesitation.

This is where he:

  • Painted The Potato Eaters
  • Developed his darker Brabant style
  • Lived during a crucial turning point in his life

The Van Gogh Village Museum (formerly called Vincentre) is excellent. Unlike Zundert, I left Nuenen feeling I genuinely understood him better.

What makes Nuenen different is that you can still recognize locations from his sketches and paintings — the church, the village streets, the rural atmosphere.

If you’re short on time in Brabant, make it Nuenen.

Den Bosch — Early Works and a Beautiful City

Den Bosch (’s-Hertogenbosch) is home to the Noordbrabants Museum, which owns several early Van Gogh works.

These are not the colorful masterpieces most visitors imagine. They’re darker, more restrained, and clearly part of his learning process.

But that’s exactly why they’re interesting.

You see the progression toward The Potato Eaters. You see the discipline before the fame.

If you’re already visiting Den Bosch — which is a wonderful city in its own right — I would absolutely include the museum.

Zundert — Meaningful, But Optional

Zundert is where Vincent was born.

But if you ask me where I would spend my time in Brabant, this is not my first choice.

The Van Gogh House stands on the original location of his birth home. The structure itself is not original, and that is important if you care about authenticity.

When I visited, I found the exhibition thin. Much of what’s presented here is covered more thoroughly in Nuenen. I would not return.

If you’re deeply interested in his childhood or modern art inspired by him, it may still be worth the ticket.

Otherwise, I found the places outside the museum more interesting:

  • Take a photo outside his birth home
  • Visit the church and graveyard (where is brother is buried)
  • Listen to the audio fragment at the information point

Then continue toward Nuenen.

Skip the tourist traps.

Etten — Worth a Short Stop

Etten is where Vincent officially decided to pursue art as a career.

The Van Gogh Church surprised me in a good way. The volunteers took time to explain details that you won’t get from a simple information panel.

It’s not a large museum experience, but it adds meaningful context.

If you’re already in Brabant or combining several locations, I would include Etten.

Tilburg — For Dedicated Fans Only

Tilburg is where Vincent took drawing lessons at age 13.

His classroom can still be visited, but it’s inside an active university building and requires advance planning.

If you’re creating a themed Van Gogh trip and want completeness, you can include it.

If your time is limited, I would skip it without hesitation.

My Personal Ranking in Brabant

If you’re short on time:

  1. Nuenen — essential
  2. Den Bosch — strong addition
  3. Etten — meaningful if nearby
  4. Zundert — optional
  5. Tilburg — only for dedicated fans

That’s how I would structure it for myself.

Can You Visit Brabant as a Day Trip?

Yes — but realistically, you’ll need a car or a private driver guide.

Public transport between these towns is possible but slow and indirect.

If you are considering a private day – Not because it’s luxurious – but because it protects your time – I recommend one of two options:

  1. Visit the Kröller Müller Museum and Nuenen including dinner in a mill he painted
  2. Hire me as a private driver guide and visit Van Gogh locations in Brabant
