I can try to sugar coat it but the truth about weather in april In Amsterdam is that it is as unpredictable as it gets.

We have a saying here: ‘April doet wat hij wil’ – April does what it wants.

And believe me, it really does.

One moment you’re enjoying sunny skies, the next you’re reaching for your umbrella.

But don’t let that discourage you.

Temperatures

Expect daytime temperatures between 10-15°C (50-59°F), with nights dropping to 3-7°C (37-45°F).

That’s why layering is your best friend in Amsterdam during April.

The good news is April showers in Amsterdam are usually brief.

Plus, the city is well-equipped for wet weather, with plenty of indoor attractions and cozy cafés to duck into.

Just make sure you have your layers packed, and you have an umbrella, that can handle wind too.

I always love this time of year, because after a cold spell of rain, the sunshine feels extra special.

Daylight

April also brings dramatically longer days.

With daylight stretching from 13 hours at the start of the month to nearly 15 hours by the end.

We’re up north, so our daylight hours varies greatly around the year. From 7 to 17 hours a day.

I know we focus always on the rain, but you need to think about the sun too.

It gets stronger this time of year.

Always bring sunscreen and a hat.

And of course bring water.

When it comes to rain, make sure you have a good umbrella that can handle wind.

Avoid buying overpriced, flimsy umbrellas from tourist shops when you get caught in a sudden shower.

I’m not a fan of plastic poncho rain covers:

  • Only tourist wear them – you single yourself out immediately
  • By the time you have it on, you’re already wet
  • It’s bad for the environment
  • It’s a hassle

So skip those.

The Dutch life with rain, and if they don’t seem to need it…

When it’s a bit colder its also a good idea to have a hot drink, that is NOT is thermo mug.

Its a great feeling if your hands get warmed by your cup.

There are Benefits

There is one amazing benefit of April weather, that people never think about:

It’s perfect for photography.

Those moody skies and sudden bursts of sunshine create amazing light conditions for canal or tulip photos.

Just remember to protect your camera from unexpected drizzles.

Speaking of photography, April offers some of the most dramatic skies you’ll ever see in the Netherlands.

The mix of clouds and sudden sunshine creates perfect conditions for capturing the country. Let’s talk about wind.

Expected Winds in April

How about wind?

Usually, this time of year you’ll experience what we call a ‘gentle breeze’ most days.

Typically between 6-19 kph (4-12 mph).

Occasionally, it picks up to 20-38 kph (13-24 mph).

What to Pack for Weather in April in Amsterdam

Now, about what to pack – this is crucial for April:

  • Start with a good base layer
  • Add a warm sweater
  • And top it with a waterproof jacket
  • Comfortable, waterproof walking shoes are essential
  • A small, but sturdy umbrella (the cheap ones won’t survive our April winds)
  • Make sure your backpack is also waterproof.
  • Bring water

Layers are important. The key is being able to remove or add layers quickly

April is also tulip season, and the weather actually enhances the experience.

Those temperature fluctuations help the flowers last longer.

And the light changes are fantastic for different photos.

Even on rainy days, the flowers look spectacular – there’s something truly magical about tulips glistening with raindrops.

So don’t be upset if your tour day is not on a sunny day.

What To Do With Good Weather

April is one of the best months to be in the Netherlands to be when the weather cooperates.

The tourist season peaks this month with flower season.

The best two weeks are the end of april, but for more details please check out my post:

Of course you can’t not go to the Keukenhof Gardens. Famous for their blooming flowers.

Get Indoors if It Rains

And if the rain gets to you.

Just head indoors.

⤷ Here is my post on my favorite cafes in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has amazing museums and attractions, most of them indoor.

There’s nothing better than admiring Rembrandts while seeing the dark skies through the skylight in the main hall of the Rijksmuseum.

Game Changer: Change Your Mindset

The changing weather also means you’ll experience Amsterdam like a local.

There’s nothing more Dutch than ducking into a brown café during a sudden shower, or joining Amsterdammers on sunny terraces when the sun breaks through.

I would think of Amsterdam’s April weather not as an inconvenience, but as part of the true Dutch experience.

After all, there’s nothing more Dutch than discussing the weather while enjoying a coffee in a cozy café, watching the rain pass by.

We love to complain about the weather.

It’s in our DNA.

It’s the easiest way to connect with a local.

Start complaining about the weather.

Oh we don’t complain just when it rains.

No, we love to complain when the weather is a amazing too:

“Isn’t it warm? It is, isn’t it? I liked it for a moment, but now, no, it’s too much. Why is there not more balance, why is it so extreme…”

This is a typical Dutch conversation.

Remember: the Dutch don’t let weather stop them – they adapt.

With the right preparation, you can too.

And that makes the difference between a “maw” holiday, and a great holiday.

Pack smart, stay flexible, and embrace the changing weather.

That’s what we do.

Some of your best memories might just come from those unexpected weather moments.
