Best Location for Tulip Photos
Location matters – the Noordoostpolder region is my favorite area.
Yes, I prefer this over the famous Keukenhof region.
Why?
The Noordoostpolder offers the most photogenic fields, with nearly 2,000 hectares of tulips creating a stunning natural canvas.
Another great benefit: this is NOT where the tourist crowds are.
Protecting the Tulips
Now you’re here, you want the best photos.
I get that.
But every year, I see people repeatedly damage the tulips because only one thing seems essential: that perfect selfie.
The Netherlands Tourism Board Selfie video:
Here’s what many people don’t realize:
You never need to enter the fields for great shots.
The best photos come from clever angles along the edges.
This matters because flower growers lose significant money from damaged blooms when people walk through their fields.
What makes me sad is that these growers earn nothing from us visitors.
They’re kind enough to keep the fields open and unprotected so we can all enjoy them.
The least we can do is show respect.

Photography Tips That Work
Want to know the secret to amazing photos?
Get low to the ground at field edges.
This creates the illusion of being surrounded by tulips while keeping the flowers safe.
For selfies, use a wide-angle lens and position yourself slightly off-center.
The rows of tulips create natural leading lines that draw the eye.
The best photos happen during the ‘golden hour’ – just after sunrise or before sunset.
Some fields also have designated photo spots with elevated platforms to help you get that perfect shot.
Where to See the Tulips

My favorite area is the Noordoostpolder, but it’s a little remote.
You’ll need a rental car or a private tour (you can book me) – during the season, I take guests here and show them the best spots).
The Bollenstreek is the most famous area.
I recommend this if you don’t want to drive or prefer to take a group tour (this is the tour I recommend).
This is why you get to visit the famous Keukenhof Gardens. They take you to a tulip farm, a highlight for many.
But expect smaller fields here and many more tourists (compared to the Northeast polder).
And at the end of the day, you’re taken on a sightseeing boat along the Dutch countryside.
It’s a nice, well-rounded group tour.
About Keukenhof

The Keukenhof is the easiest way to see tulips. This world-famous park welcomes millions every year – and for good reason.
The park is beautiful, but remember: these are not fields, this is a park.
Something not everybody realizes before they go.
Also, because of the crowds, picture-taking can be challenging.
Here is my full article about the Keukenhof park.
Remember: a genuinely great photo respects the beauty and the business of tulip farming.
That being said, I wish you a fantastic time at the fields – an experience you won’t easily forget.

The optimal time is during the ‘golden hour’ – the first hour after sunrise or the last hour before sunset. This provides the best lighting and fewer crowds. Peak blooming season typically runs mid-April through early May. Here is my post for the best times to visit the tulip fields.
Where are the best spots for tulip field photos?
The Noordoostpolder region offers the most photogenic locations. Once at the field, stay at the edges. Do not walk through the fields. You can still take amazing photos without disturbing the flowers.

Use your phone’s or camera’s wide-angle setting for wide landscape shots showing the entire field. For close-ups from the field edge, use portrait mode on your phone or a zoom lens on your camera. Early morning or late afternoon light works best. Modern smartphones can handle these shots beautifully – no professional equipment is needed.
Are there specific rules for photographing tulip fields?
Yes – never enter the fields themselves. Stay on designated paths or field edges. Always respect posted signs and farmer guidelines.
